Chadstone

Project
With over 500 stores and a reputation as Australia’s fashion capital, Chadstone draws not just locals, but visitors from around the world. On its busiest trading days, the centre sees up to 70,000 shoppers pass through its doors.

Chadstone is Australia’s fashion capital, a premier shopping destination that attracts an impressive number of visitors each year. With up to 70,000 visitors on its busiest trading days and over 20 million visitors each year, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the precinct has grown into a beloved shopping and entertainment hub.

Chadstone Shopping Centre, colloquially known as Chaddy, is Australia’s biggest shopping centre, and one of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. Spanning over 550 stores, including those owned by luxury brands such as Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Dior and Louis Vuitton, the sheer breadth of this shopping centre remains a staggering achievement.

To build on its success, Chadstone has also expanded the precinct to include a 250-room hotel room and 15,000m2 of office space. The hotel and office spaces officially opened in 2019 and have become significant additions.

Chadstone’s expansion highlights the importance of ongoing development and innovation in the retail and hospitality sectors. The owners of Chadstone recognized the need to evolve with the changing needs of consumers and businesses, and the addition of the hotel and office space is a testament to their commitment to providing a world-class experience for visitors.

PSV Consulting’s Role

The team at PSV played a critical role in the construction of the new Market Pavilion at Chadstone. Engaged by John Holland, they were tasked with providing independent structural design reviews and certification of the entire structural works, as designed by the Robert Bird Group.

The challenges of this project were significant. The team had to prioritise public safety throughout the works and stage them to ensure that adjoining buildings and streets remained functional throughout the whole process. This required careful planning and collaboration with all stakeholders involved in the project.

Chadstone’s new Market Pavilion fresh food precinct expansion will include more than 26,500sqm of retail area at ground level, and a roof design with natural ventilation louvres which will reduce energy consumption by 500,000kWg per year. This in addition to a newly constructed level above that will offer visitors a range of services.

Sitting atop both areas, a new nine-storey office tower will also add a further 20,000sqm of high-quality office space along with a new level of covered parking area. This additional parking level provides for office and retail workers during the week and will be open to Chadstone’s visitors on the weekend.

This project is due for completion in mid-2024, the local community is eagerly anticipating the new offerings that will undoubtedly contribute to the area’s economic growth.
